Gonzales Tells Committee, “I Like Horses”

July 25, 2007

Washington - Appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee today, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales responded to all questions with the phrase, “I like horses.” The Attorney General would not elaborate or adjust his statement. He simply repeated, some 172 times in total, the phrase, “I Like Horses.”

Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) asked Gonzales, “Attorney General, do you realize you’re not saying anything other than ‘I like horses?’” The Attorney General paused, as if considering his response. He then said, “I like horses.”

The Committee’s session was terminated earlier than scheduled to allow Gonzales to be examined by a mental health professional. Asked by reporters outside the hearing room if he had suffered a breakdown, Gonzales shrugged and said, “I like horses.”
