Overbearing: From NPNR, I’m David Overbearing. In Washington today, questioning of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor by the Senate Judiciary continued. There were at times pointed questions regarding her decision in a race-discrimination case involving firefighters in New Haven, Conn. There was also sharp questioning from Texas Republican Jeff Franklin regarding Sotomayor’s food preferences, and how that might influence her behavior as a judge.
Senator Franklin: Now, I’ve heard you have a fondness for certain Mexican dishes, certain cuisine of that type. And I must confess concern, Judge, that that type of preference might influence your decision in a court case. Say if a case involving hot dogs comes before the court – the regulation of hot dogs. Will you be biased against the hot dogs because they’re not Mexican foods? Because they are an American type dish? I worry about that, Judge. I worry quite a bit about that. Not just for me, but for the hot dogs as well.
Overbearing: Judge Sotomayor responded that she would not let personal preference influence her decision in any case, whether it involves food or not. The full Senate is likely to vote on Sotomayor’s nomination by August.
